Litter Registration Statistics show America’s Favorite Dogs
Each year the American Kennel Club compiles litter registration statistics and shares information with the public. Statistics on America’s favorite dog breeds in 2009 were released by the AKC in January of 2010. it seems dog lovers’ interests have not changed much in the last couple of years. The same breeds remain in the top ten with only a couple of changes in rank.
Top Ten most Popular AKC Dog Breeds of 2009
- Labrador Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Golden Retriever
- Beagle
- Boxer
- Bulldog
- Dachshund
- Poodle
- Shih Tzu
The ever popular Labrador Retriever still ranks number one while the German Shepherd rose to second, switching places from 2008 statistics with the Yorkshire Terrier. Bulldogs climbed to seventh, switching places with the Dachshund. Bulldogs have gained quite a bit of popularity since their position of twenty-one just ten years ago.
From the large Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd to the medium sized Beagle and Dachshund to the tiny Yorkshire Terrier, it’s evident that Americans love all sizes of dogs.
Why Labrador Retrievers are America’s Favorite Breed
Labrador Retrievers personify the typical American family dog. Ask almost any Lab owner and they can testify that their dog is loyal, playful and will alert to visitors but gets along with other people and pets. Labs also ranked as the seventh most intelligent breed when measured by understanding and obedience and 91.4% of Labs tested passed the American Temperament Test. Because of their intelligence and temperament, Labs make great guide dogs and search and rescue dogs. They are also a hardy breed and require minimal grooming.
AKC Favorite Breeds of Ten Years Ago
In 1999, the same breeds dominated the top ten favorites except for just a few differences. The Labrador Retriever was number one for 1999, with the Golden Retriever right behind in position number two. Chihuahuas and Rottweilers have slipped from the top ten today but in 1999 they placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Bulldogs have gained quite a bit of popularity since their position of twenty-one just ten years ago.
Other Popular Dog Breeds of 2009
Although Miniature Schnauzers, Chihuahuas, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shorthaired Pointers, and Pugs were not in the top ten breeds, they remain popular as well. other well-known breeds such as the Bassett Hound, Bichon Frise, Border Collie, and Pekingese placed lower on the list.
Portugese Water Dog, White House Dog
The Portugese Water Dog, the breed currently living in the White House climbed slightly from position 64 in 2008 to position 60 in 2009. this may or may not be due to the fact that it is the Obama family’s breed of choice. From 1999 to 2004, Portugese Water Dogs had risen in popularity from eightieth position to sixty-ninth.
