Hypoallergenic dog beds: Nothing to sneeze at!
A hypoallergenic dog bed is made with material and stuffing that in most cases, will not cause an allergic reaction. This does not mean that a hypoallergenic dog bed will not cause an allergic reaction; it means that the possibility is lessened.
Many different things cause dog allergies, and dogs can suffer from the same allergies that humans do. When allergies flare up, your dog is miserable from the continuous scratching, due to the itchy skin, weepy eyes, and runny nose. Ragweed, grass, cigarette smoke, dust, mold spores, pollen grains, carpet cleaner, and even air fresheners can cause an allergic reaction. By providing your dog with a hypoallergenic dog bed, you are getting them off the floor where most of these allergens settle.
Hypoallergenic dog beds can be made of several different substances. The most popular stuffing for a hypoallergenic dog bed is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Not only are the beds considered hypoallergenic, but is also eco-friendly. The recycled plastic bottles are shredded and then sewn securely into a durable cover that is also considered hypoallergenic. In rare cases, there are dogs who are allergic to plastic, therefore if you know that your dog has an allergic reaction to it’s plastic food or watering bowl, a hypoallergenic dog bed containing recycled plastic bottles, may not be the right choice for you.
Another very popular choice for a hypoallergenic dog bed is one made with gel foam
. Gel foam conforms to the dog’s body, easing pressure points. The gel foam is secured inside the dog bed so leakage is not a concern. The gel foam dog beds are also covered with a hypoallergenic cover, which could be made of hemp or 100% organic cotton, which lessens the chances of allergic reactions due to the chemical free growing and harvesting process. It is suggested that the gel foam not be allowed to get wet. If your dog is incontinent, consider a hypoallergenic dog bed with different filler.
Hypoallergenic dog beds are also available with small pockets sewn into the bed. In these pockets, you can put eucalyptus or other natural substances to reduce odor. Eucalyptus is also known to act as a natural repellent to fleas and mites. Dogs are not allergic to fleas, but the saliva that a flea leaves on a dog’s body, can cause an allergic reaction.
You can use a hypoallergenic dog bed for any dog, whether they have allergies or not. But when considering whether or not to get a hypoallergenic dog bed, keep in mind that it is not uncommon for a dog to develop allergies at any time during their life. Using a hypoallergenic dog bed to start with, will lesson the affects of allergies later, should your dog become susceptible, and always provide them with a restful sleep.
No matter how durable a dog bed is meant to be, over time, wear and tear on the fabric is inevitable and the bed will have to be replaced. Also take into consideration the size of the dog you are buying the bed for. If buying a hypoallergenic dog bed for a puppy, that puppy will grow and the hypoallergenic dog bed will have to be replaced on a regular basis to provide support and comfort until the dog reaches it’s adult size.
