Foster pets offer a unique solution to those in the military

Those in the military who are deployed overseas have very few options when it comes to the care of their pets. Soldiers, often called up on a moment’s notice, face the choice of either surrendering pets to a new home, placing them in a shelter, or simply abandoning them. There are plenty of options available to help the family of the soldier, but few for their pets.

Even when friends or relatives are willing to help with the soldier’s animal, issues can arise if the animal has conflicts with existing pets, family members, or even the living situation. Shelters are currently overflowing with military pets and sometimes their only option is to reject the pet or put it to sleep. Indeed, animals are paying a heavy price for our nation’s conflicts.

Foster homes and certain organizations offer support

Realizing the need for this type of service, organizations like Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pets (GASP) and NetPets Military Pets Foster Project have formed networks of foster homes to support troops by providing another alternative to deploying soldiers. Foster families provide shelter and care for military pets in their home until they can be reunited with their owner. A variety of pets, including cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, and fish live in the comfort of foster homes until the soldier returns.

Families who would like support the soldiers by fostering a pet can fill out an application describing what type of pets they would like, what services they wish to provide and for what length of time. Soldiers also draw up a list of requirements and information describing the pet’s behavior, favorite foods and toys, health history, special needs, responsibility for expenses or any damages done by the pet and emergency contact information. When a match is found, specifics of the agreement can be drawn up into a legal contract.

How Military Service Members Locate Care for Pets

Military members can contact these organizations or check locally with veterinary offices, shelters, regional agencies, dog training clubs, and any organization involved in pet rescue for information about families who wish to provide foster care for military pets. Some boarding facilities also offer discounts to military pet owners needing an extended living arrangement for their animal.

Foster homes provide those in the military with the peace of mind of knowing their pet is well cared for and waiting for them when they return home. It is one less thing these brave men and women have to worry about.
