Drug discount cards saving money for Napa residents
Napa County residents who use the prescription drug discountcard have saved an average of $19 a prescription on more than 1,000prescriptions since the program started in June, county healthofficials said this week.
The free card offers average savings of 22 percent on the price ofcommonly prescribed drugs, including pet medications, said HeidiMerchen, Public Health staff services analyst.
The cards are available to any Napa County resident regardless ofage, income or existing health coverage but the savings apply onlyto medications that are not covered by insurance.
Approximately 16 pharmacies in the county, including CVS (Longs)Drug, Wal-Mart, Raley’s, Rite Aid, Safeway and Family Drug acceptthe discount card.
One public health nursing client saved more than $60 filling oneprescription, Merchen said.
A member of the Lake Berryessa Senior Center told herdaughter-in-law about the program and she saved more than $40 onone prescription, Merchen said.
“This is exactly the effect I hoped this program would have in NapaCounty,” said Napa County Supervisor Diane Dillon.
There is no cost to taxpayers or Napa County to make the cardsavailable, Merchen said.
The cards are available at several locations in Napa, AmericanCanyon, Yountville, Sr. Helena, Calistoga and Lake Berryessa. Thereis no paperwork or enrollment requirements.
