A unique dog bed lets your dog know who rules the house

Some dog owners may not know this, but their four-legged companions are often talking to them. They obviously can’t use words (well most can’t), but they still have a way of expressing what they want. I didn’t realize this until I took my rambunctious cocker spaniel puppy to obedience school. As it turns out, the entire time I was trying to teach him to stay off the new sofa he was telling me ‘Sir, I’d like one of these for my own’ loud and clear.

I should have figured this out earlier, and it really hit me like a brick when I was reading the canine psychology pamphlet that came with our obedience training. It said it clearly: dogs enjoy resting in elevated places, and the higher up they are, the greater they feel their stature is amongst their family unit. In my eyes I was simply enforcing a loving spouses rule in an attempt to keep the family dog in her good graces. In poor Bud’s eyes, however, I was more or less telling him that he wasn’t really worthy of any praise or status. Actions like this severely added to his anxiety which was feeding his rambunctious behavior.

The solution: a bed for Bud.

At first we just tried things like pillows and piles of blankets/old clothes, but Bud wasn’t too keen on them (other than shoes). Then one day I was browsing the internet, looking for pet supplies, and I found a site with unique dog beds. Something clicked in my mind and I quickly searched to see if they had one that resembled our sofa set. The missing piece of the puzzle was that in Bud’s mind the thing I’d given him to sit on (pillows) didn’t resemble what the rest of us used.

Luckily I found a classic dog couch that resembled our sofa in style and was reasonably close in color, so I went ahead and bought it. It arrived just in time for the weekend and I placed it next to the sofa (after moving a plant a few feet to make room) and Bud jumped right in!

Since then he’s been quite happy feeling that he is a valued part of our ‘pack’ and has mellowed out significantly. He’s stopped running around the house (And occasionally into objects) at breakneck speed, he doesn’t steal shoes as often (And we always know to look in his bed if they’re missing), but according to my son’s teacher he has started to eat homework assignments.

The moral of the story is that dogs have psychological needs and wants too. One of them is for a comfortable place to rest that makes them feel they are part of the family. To this end you should seriously consider looking at unique dog beds, they have styles that go with almost any decor.

Some resemble sofas, while others resembled beds. Some of the more creative varieties I’d be hard pressed to describe. While I was browsing for Bud’s bed I saw everything from what looked like a pyramid comprised of rounded pillows piled on top of each other, large pouches (I’m guessing these are perfect for dogs that like to live in purses), and even beds shaped like giant donuts. The selection of unique dog beds is almost limitless!
